A wireless communications system and method employs wireless nodes in a peer-to-peer (P2P) wireless network. A connectivity metric (CM) value indicative of a number of other wireless nodes of the P2P a particular wireless network to which the wireless node is connected is generated. The CM value is transmitted and received and full connectivity information maintained by the wireless node is transmitted and received at a frequency determined based on the CM value.
