The device has a cutting device (3) for introducing cuts in a material web (1) and a bearing surface (2) for planar support of the material web. A measuring device is provided for determining a residual wall thickness of the remaining material thickness, during the cutting operation of the material web along the section curve. The cutting device and the bearing surface are made from electrically conductive material, that is provided with a voltage source. An independent claim is included for a method for controlling a cutting device for the introduction of cuts into the material web.
