The present invention relates to a compact wide angle lens system. The compact wide angle lens system has a first lens group having negative power towards an imaging element to form an image from an object side, and a second lens group having positive power and an aperture stop arranged in order. Regarding to the compact wide angle lens system, the first lens group having negative power includes a single-layered first lens having negative power and a singled-layered second lens having positive power, and the second lens group includes a single-layered third lens having positive power, a single-layered fourth lens having positive power, and a single-layered fifth lens having negative power. When assuming a synthesized focal distance of the first lens group as F1 and a synthesized focal distance of the second lens group as F2, the following formula of -8 < F1/F2 < -3 is satisfied.
