PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication server which authenticate whether a user of an originating portable terminal is an appropriate person to access to a destination portable terminal, and to provide an authentication method. SOLUTION: An authentication server has: an identification information acquisition unit for acquiring identification information on an originating communication terminal used by a user; an authentication request reception unit for receiving an authentication request including identification information on the communication terminal input into the originating communication terminal; and a determination unit for determining whether or not to grant the user's access from the originating communication terminal to a destination communication terminal based on a telephone directory registered with the communication terminal identified by the identification information included in the authentication request.
