PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a skin external preparation which maintains the moisture content in the skin and can lead to moist skin by activating caspase-14 present in the skin not merely applying a humectant to the skin as in the past. SOLUTION: The skin external preparation includes a phosphorylated sugar and a phospholipid. It is preferred that the phosphorylated sugar is at least one kind selected from glucose-1-phosphate, glucose-6-phosphate, and phosphoenolpyruvic acid, and the phospholipid is at least one kind selected from phosphatidic acid and lysophosphatidic acid. Incorporation of the phosphorylated sugar and the phospholipid obtains a synergistic effect on the activation of caspase-14 which has not been brought about by incorporation of the phosphorylated sugar alone or the phospholipid alone.
