A method for estimating an orientation of a cardiac long axis from corresponding early frame and late frame PET images comprising the steps of defining a bounding box of the myocardium in the late frame image, applying the bounding box to the early frame, estimating a main axis of the image of the early frame within the bounding box and reorienting the image of the early frame according to the estimated main axis. The main axis of the image of the late frame within the bounding box is then estimated and the late frame reorientated according to the estimated main axis. The estimated main axis of the early frame is then compared to the estimated main axis of the late frame. If the angular difference in orientation between the estimated main axis of the early frame and the estimated main axis of the late frame is greater than a predetermined threshold then a warning is displayed. The reorientation may be performed using phase information or by calculation of moments of intertia and the early frame may be selected from a number of image frames to correspond to a maximum in a time activity curve corresponding to a tracer used in the PET imaging process. |
