An adhesive, sizing or coating compound, which is used dispersed in water, comprises an alkali-solubilized protein and a fluid-stabilizing amount of a compound having the formula R.NH.C(: NH).NH.CN, where R is H (the compound then being dicyandiamide) or a 1-4 C alkyl group or a 2-4 C alkylol group. The alkyl group may be isopropyl-, n-butyl- or isobutyl-. The alkylol group may be ethylol or isopropylol. The protein may be casein or a vegetable protein, e.g. wheat, soya, maize or barley protein. The amount of protein may be from 5 to 50 per cent of the weight of the aqueous dispersion. The amount of the fluid-stabilizing compound may be from 5 to 30 per cent of the dry weight of the protein.
