PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold which induces neither fusion of an optical glass element and the surface of a protective layer of the mold nor cracking of the optical glass. SOLUTION: The mold for molding an optical glass element, having excellent mold releasability from an optical glass element after press molding is obtained by subjecting a molding face formed on the surface of a preform for a mold to etching treatment by a reverse sputtering process to control the surface roughness (Ra<SP>1</SP>) of the molding face to 0.01 to 50 nm and further subjecting the molding face to a sputtering process to thereby form a protective layer.
