Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii). In a gas producer for gasifying solid or liquid carbonaceous material of the kind having a combustion chamber which is circular in section and has a peripheral inlet through which air passes to set up a radial inward vortex flow in the chamber, the material to be gasefied being injected into the vortex for its partial combustion whilst the combustible gases generated discharge through an axial outlet, at least one of the end walls of the chamber is provided with a jacket through which the air flows from an axial inlet radially outwards to a peripheral outlet which communicates with the peripheral inlet of the combustion chamber, the end wall being thus cooled by the air whilst the air is preheated. An example of the treatment of fuel for its complete combustion in apparatus of the above kind is described in Specification 338,108, [Class 55 (ii)]. In the form shown, the apparatus consists of a double-walled, circular section, combustion chamber 3 having an axially-mounted oil or finely-divided coal &c. injector nozzle 11 at one end and an axial gas outlet at the other. Air under pressure is supplied simultaneously to volutes 14 and 15 surrounding the injector and gas outlet respectively, and flows in a spirally outward path in the space between the double walls 2 and is thus preheated. The hot air enters the chamber 3 through inclined vanes mounted around its periphery, the vanes increasing the spinning motion of the air and gases in the chamber. The fuel particles injected by the nozzle 11, which is preferably of the rotary type described in Specification 639,483, so as to enable the particle size to be controlled, are carried around by the air, the larger particles being burnt in an outer zone and the smaller particles moving around in an inner zone where they are gasefied by the heat of combustion of the larger particles. The generated combustible gas discharges through the axial outlet pipe. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), this gas then passes to a second vortex flow chamber where cracking of condensible vapours to produce fixed gases occurs. In both modifications the combustion chamber walls may be additionally cooled by a waterjacket, steam generated from the jacket being injected into the chamber to take part in the gas generating reactions.</p>
