A method for operating a vehicle identification number storing apparatus for storing a vehicle identification number according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises the following steps: checking whether a check sum stored in a first memory matches a previously calculated check sum when an engine state of a vehicle changes from an off state to an on state; determining a cause of a check sum mismatch when the check sum stored in the first memory does not match the previously calculated check sum; and storing a particular value in a second memory when the cause of the check sum mismatch is an initial state. As a result, according to the present invention, an identification number can be permanently stored in a vehicle using an external device for product management in the process of mass production of vehicles. |
