Provided is a general-purpose position sensing device of a lever for an automatic transmission in order to be applied universally to a shift lever of various models. The general-purpose position sensing device comprises a pair of receiving coils which is installed on a substrate in which the same shapes changing to gradually increase or decrease an area in a front-rear direction of a shift lever are arranged in a rotational symmetry so as to have a current flow in the opposite direction to each other; an excitation coil which is installed on the substrate with space from the pair of receiving coils and is wound multiple times along a track according to the edge of the receiving coil; and a coupler which sequentially shields some area of one of the receiving coils while moving by interworking with the front-rear movement of the shift lever.
