The apparatus (1) has a stage inverter (8) connected to a supply network (2) or a low-voltage battery, and a resonant circuit (9) connected to the stage inverter and to another stage inverter (10) that is connected to a high voltage battery of a motor vehicle. The former stage inverter has an inductor (Ls) that stays in series connection to a primary winding (Prim) of a transformer (12), and a capacitor (Cp) is connected in parallel to the primary winding. The latter stage inverter is connected to a secondary winding (Sec) of the transformer. A switch (6) is connected to the former inverter. An independent claim is also included for a method for managing batteries of a motor vehicle.
