The internal combustion engine (1) comprises a combustion air line (5) to supply the combustion air to two cylinders (3). An exhaust manifold (7) discharges an exhaust gas from the cylinders. A cylinder is directly connected with the exhaust manifold in a fluid manner without branching to an exhaust gas recirculation line (11). A valve unit (21) for the exhaust manifold is arranged in a fluid path (19) of another cylinder. Another valve unit (23) is arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation line. The upstream of two valve units is arranged on the exhaust gas treatment elements (25,27).
