The laser ignition system (1) has a generating unit which generates the pulsed laser beam (10). A focusing unit (20) focuses the generated pulsed laser beam to a focus area (23) for igniting a combustible gas mixture in an internal combustion engine or a burner. The focusing unit is designed as a telescopic lens system, by which an image is formed with a Strehl ratio of less than 0.8. The lens system is provided with a diverging lens (21) and focusing lens (22), and is illuminated at a maximum of 65% of clear aperture.
