This light diffusion member comprises a light-transmissible substrate, a plurality of light masking layers, and a light diffusion part. The light diffusion part is configured to further comprise a light emission end face, a light entry end face which has a larger surface area than the surface area of the light emission end face, and a reflecting face, light which enters from the light entry end face is anisotropically diffused in an azimuth direction seen from a normal direction of a substrate, and the height from the light entry end face to the light emission end face of the light diffusion part is greater than the thickness of the light mask layers. The azimuth direction whereupon the diffusion of the light diffusion part is relatively strong and any side which forms the outer shape of the substrate are approximately parallel. The planar shape of the light masking layers seen from the normal direction of one face of the substrate is an anisotropic shape having at least a major axis and a minor axis. A region wherein a light masking layer is formed has a hollow part formed therein which is compartmentalized by a region wherein the light diffusion part is formed, and air is present in the hollow part. |
