PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a precursor for a superconducting wire rod which can suppresses ununiformity of cross sections in area reduction processing and a superconducting wire rod. ! SOLUTION: A precursor for a superconducting wire rod comprises a plurality of Nb elements 10 consisting of an Nb filament 3 which is composed of Nb or an Nb alloy and coated with a first intermediate layer 7 having a Vickers hardness between those of Cu and the Nb filament 3, a plurality of Sn elements 9 consisting of an Sn filament 4 which is composed of Sn or an Sn alloy and coated with a Cu layer 2 composed of Cu, a diffusion barrier layer 5 which is arranged collectively on the outer periphery of the Nb elements 10 and the Sn elements 9 to suppress diffusion of Sn and a stabilization Cu layer 6 which is arranged on the outer periphery of the diffusion barrier layer 5 to stabilize superconduction. !
