A liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal display panel having, a first substrate, a second substrate, a sealing material provided between the first substrate and the second substrate, a liquid crystal layer sealed in a region surrounded by the sealing material between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first substrate includes a plurality of first cell regions having a pixel electrode and a thin film transistor arranged in a matrix, and the second substrate includes a protective film over the second substrate and a light blocking film coated with the protective film on a surface of the second substrate on the liquid crystal layer side.

1. A liquid crystal display device, comprising a liquid crystal display panel having:
a first substrate; a second substrate; a sealing material provided between the first substrate and the second substrate so that the first substrate and the second substrate are pasted together; and a liquid crystal layer sealed in a region surrounded by the sealing material between the first substrate and the second substrate; wherein the first substrate includes a plurality of first cell regions arranged in a matrix, each of the first cell regions having a pixel electrode and a thin film transistor; the second substrate includes a protective film over the second substrate and a light blocking film coated with the protective film on a surface of the second substrate on the liquid crystal layer side; an end of the protective film is located inside an end of the second substrate between a most inner wall surface and most outer wall surface of the sealing material and closer to a periphery of the second substrate than a position of the light blocking film with respect to the periphery of the second substrate; and the protective film is made of a protective material.
