The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for encoding/decoding a motion vector and an apparatus and a method for encoding/decoding an image using the same. The apparatus for encoding a motion vector of the present invention includes a prediction motion vector selection unit for selecting an optimal prediction motion vector from a candidate motion vector set of a current block; a prediction mode determination unit for determining a motion vector prediction mode of the current block by selecting one motion vector prediction mode among a plurality of the motion vector prediction modes based on a motion vector decoding apparatus and a predetermined determination criteria; and an encoding unit for determining an optimal prediction motion vector or a default prediction vector as a prediction motion vector of a current motion vector according to the determined motion vector prediction mode, encoding a differential vector between the current block and the determined prediction motion vector, and selectively encoding and outputting the determined motion vector prediction mode according to the determined motion vector prediction mode. According to the present invention, not only encoding efficiency can be improved by reducing an amount of bit required to encode the motion vector, but also performance of the decoder can be improved by preventing decoder failure from occurring even when errors occur during a decoding process.
