PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method that is particularly useful for treating Barrett's esophagus but may also be useful for treating other esophageal tissues, typically by cryogenic ablation of atypical tissue, and a controlled balloon expansion assembly.SOLUTION: This invention provides a method for substantially preventing further expansion of a balloon while the balloon cools esophageal target tissue by causing a refrigerant to be delivered through a refrigerant delivery lumen and into the balloon interior and placing the balloon into an expanded cooled state with the temperature of the balloon lower than a glass transition temperature. This invention also provides a controlled balloon expansion assembly including an exhaust passageway device that defines an exhaust passageway coupleable to the balloon interior, and a relief valve assembly that comprises a relief valve, a pressurization device and valving. |
