摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device that can easily achieve a reduction in size and an increase in angle of view and efficiency, while solving a difficulty during manufacture, and an image display apparatus including the device.SOLUTION: An optical device comprises: a light guide body 20 that has a first panel surface 201 arranged opposite to an image forming unit 10 and a second panel surface 202 arranged opposite to the first panel surface 201, receives image light through a light incident surface 20a formed at an end of the first panel surface 201, and guides the image light to a light emission surface 20b formed in front of the eyes of an observer with the first panel surface 201 and the second panel surface 202; a first diffraction optical element 30a that is provided on the light incident surface 20a, and diffracts the image light made incident on the light incident surface 20a in a predetermined direction to be transmitted to the inside of the light guide body; a second diffraction optical element 30b that is provided on a light emission surface 20b, and diffracts the image light emitted from the light emission surface 20b in a predetermined direction to be transmitted to the front of the eyes of the observer; and single or a plurality of reflection surfaces 41 and 42 that are arranged on a waveguide of the image light diffracted by the first diffraction optical element 30a.
