In order to correct a difference in the optical path length of light that has been outputted from two modulation units, and suitably maintain the quality of an optical signal, this optical modulator is provided with: a first modulation unit comprising a first optical waveguide and a first modulation electrode; a second modulation unit comprising a second optical waveguide and a second modulation electrode; a waveguide substrate comprising a first optical path that guides and emits light that has been modulated by the first modulation unit, and a second optical path that guides and emits light that has been modulated by the second modulation unit; and a multiplexed optical system which comprises a first surface and a second surface that faces the first surface, and which causes first emitted light from the first optical path and second emitted light from the second optical path to each be incident from different locations on the first surface and then to be multiplexed at a multiplex point on the second surface and emitted, wherein the length of the optical path between the multiplex point and the first surface for the first emitted light is shorter than the length of the optical path between the multiplex point and the first surface for the second emitted light, and the length of the optical path between the first modulation unit and the first surface and the length of the optical path between the second modulation unit and the first surface are different to one another. |
