The mechanical shaft (10) has a cavity (20) in its interior, where the cavity is evacuated or is filled with a medium having low thermal conductivity (Lambda-1,Lambda-0). The cross sectional area of the mechanical shaft has a value, at which the resulting stiffness of the mechanical shaft or the resulting critical bending speed of the mechanical shaft exceeds a predetermined threshold value. The length of the cavity is between 1 percent and 99 percent of the length of the mechanical shaft. An independent claim is included for a machine having a mechanical shaft that is brought in connection with a cryogenic process working stage of a cryogenic system.
