The present invention relates to a camera based command input device to enable a user to input a user command without being in direct contact with a screen by recognizing the shape of the user′s hand and a method thereof. The present invention enables the user to operate hardware from a near or distant place through a simple gesture without a remote controller by recognizing the command or character to be entered by the user based on a difference in area in accordance to the morphological characteristics of the hand of the user.
