PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce at least one dimension of a light source device and a projection type video display device for performing the time-division emission of reference video light by using a fluorescent substance.SOLUTION: The light source device includes: a light source; a polarization state adjustment element for adjusting the polarization state of light from the light source; a first fluorescent substance for emitting first color component light by using light in one polarization state adjusted by the polarization state adjustment element as excitation light; a second fluorescent substance for emitting second color component light by using light in the other polarization state as excitation light; a light separation/synthesis element for guiding the light whose polarization state has been adjusted by the polarization state adjustment element to the first fluorescent substance and the second fluorescent substance, and for synthesizing the first color component light and the second color component light; and a light synthesis element for synthesizing third color component light with the first color component light and the second color component light. |
