PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compounds of formula (I), where the variables are as defined herein.SOLUTION: The present invention also provides processes for preparing the compounds of formula I, intermediates thereof, pharmaceutical compositions comprising those compounds, and methods of using these compounds and compositions. The present invention also provides methods of using such compounds and compositions for inhibiting caspases. These compounds are particularly useful as selective caspase-1/caspase-8 inhibitors.
