The present invention relates to a solid polymer fuel cell catalyst formed by supporting catalyst particles consisting of platinum, cobalt, and magnesium on a carbon powder support. In the solid polymer fuel cell catalyst, the composition ratio (molar ratio) of platinum, cobalt, and magnesium of the catalyst particles is Pt : Co : Mg = 1 : 0.4-0.5 : 0.00070-0.00095. The catalyst is manufactured by supporting cobalt and magnesium on a platinum catalyst and then performing a heat treatment and a treatment for making contact with an oxidizing solution. The thus manufactured catalyst is characterized in the peak position of the main peak appearing in the region of 2&thetas; = 40° to 42° in a x-ray diffraction analysis; the peak position is shifted to 41.0° to 41.5°. |
