Various embodiments provide methods for the detection, the diagnosis, and/or the progression monitoring of Alzheimer's disease by observing the epigenetic markers in leukocytes. Methods for determining a state of Alzheimer's disease are provided. Accordingly, these methods can comprise the steps of placing a sample comprising at least one blood component onto a substrate labeling the sample to identify at least one epigenetic marker; determining an amount of the at least one epigenetic marker; comparing the amount to a reference value; and determining a state of Alzheimer's disease.

1. A method for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease in a patient, the method comprising:
placing a sample comprising at least one blood component onto a substrate, wherein the at least one blood component comprises at least one of a white blood cell or a protein-containing extract of the white blood cell; labeling the sample with a label to identify at least one of a DNA methylation marker and a histone modification marker that change as a characteristic of Alzheimer's disease; determining an amount of a signal from the label, wherein the amount of the signal from the label correlates to the amount of the at least one DNA methylation marker and histone modification marker; comparing the amount of the sign al from the label to a control; and determining the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease based on the comparison of the amount of the signal from the label to the control, wherein a decrease in the amount of the signal from the label compared to the control indicates a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
