The present invention relates to a portable terminal and to a portable terminal to generate a haptic pattern and a method thereof. The method to generate the haptic pattern comprises: a process of displaying a menu on a touchscreen; a process of receiving an input to generate the haptic pattern through the displayed menu; a process of detecting a haptic motion inputted through the portable terminal using a sensor module; and a process of generating the haptic pattern based on the inputted haptic motion.
