摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compatibly attain the avoidance of preignition and quick start when starting a spark ignition type multi-cylinder engine.SOLUTION: When a hydraulic pressure is not higher than a predetermined value, a valve phase varying mechanism 32 locks a valve closing timing for an intake valve 21 to a midway timing between a most advanced timing and a most retarded timing after an intake bottom dead center, as a predetermined timing to enable the cold start of an engine 1. When the temperature condition of the engine when started shows a high temperature not lower than a predetermined temperature, starting means (an engine controller 100) sets a fuel injection timing for at least a cylinder being in an intake stroke at a time when stopping the engine, out of a plurality of cylinders 11, to be retarded to come into an early stage of an expansion stroke after a compression top dead center, and sets an ignition timing to come into an early stage of an expansion stroke after completing fuel injection. Even after the hydraulic pressure to be supplied to the valve phase varying mechanism exceeds the predetermined value, but before completing the start of the engine, the starting means does not further retard the valve closing timing for the intake valve than the predetermined timing.
