The device has a transport unit i.e. double wall conveyor, that is arranged for transporting tube pieces (1) along a transport path in a transport direction that extends transverse to an extension direction. A bottom opening station is arranged for laying an open block bottom, and a rotating tool or servomotor is arranged for expanding a set of open ends of the set of tube pieces. A sensor is arranged in the transport path for detecting a set of edges of the tube pieces, and for detecting a set of motion sequences in the station with regard to an acquired fabric layer. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing bags from tube pieces.
