Lag Calculation with Caving Correction in Open Hole

A gas analyzer system that can detect atmospheric air gasses in drilling mud is used to calculate an actual lag time in a well. The calculated lag time and a theoretical lag time may be compared to estimate a caving percentage in an open hole section of the well.

1. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium, on which are stored instructions, comprising instructions that when executed cause a gas analyzer to:
detect a connection event with a gas analyzer probe; detect a change in an amount of a predetermined component of atmospheric air in a drilling fluid corresponding to the connection event; calculate an actual lag responsive to detecting the change; and calculate a caving amount by comparing the actual lag with a theoretical lag for an open hole drilling well.
