Device for monitoring the location of a tool or tool holder on a work spindle

The device has a measuring device arranged outside a work spindle (1) having a channel for the propagation of an electromagnetic signal. A transmission unit couples the electromagnetic signal into the channel, and a receiving unit receives a signal reflected out of the channel. A signal processor determines a measure of the position of a tool (4) or a tool holder relative to the work spindle from the reflected signal. An insert (12) is arranged in one of two ends of the channel, where the insert defines the shape of portions (8, 9) of the channel.
