Provided are a material for an organic electroluminescent element formed of a silicon-containing four-membered ring compound, and an organic electroluminescent element using the material. The material for an organic electroluminescent element is formed of a compound represented by the following formula (1) and is used for, for example,a light-emitting layer containing a phosphorescent light-emitting dopant in an organic electroluminescent element. In the formula, X represents nitrogen or phosphorus, L's each represent an (n+1)-valent aromatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic heterocyclic group, and at least one of the L's represents an aromatic heterocyclic group. A 1 to A 6 each represent an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an alkenyl group, an alkynyl group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group, an aromatic heterocyclic group, or an amino group, and n represents an integer of 0 to 3. |
