A processor for processing histological samples has an inlet 2 for insertion of a fixing container 5 containing the samples. Preferably, the processor is operable to remove samples from the container and subject them to treatment. Preferably, the inlet comprises a pull-out drawer 21 for insertion of at least one fixing container. The fixing container may be closed, and may be provided with a slot through which a gripper (60, fig 3) of a handling apparatus (6, fig 3) can penetrate in order to remove a holding frame. A separator apparatus may be provided for physically separating samples to be embedded from those not to be embedded. A first outlet 3 may be provided for discharging unembedded samples, and a second outlet 4 may be provided for discharging embedded samples. The capability of the processor to receive the samples while present in a container eliminates the need for manual loading of individual samples into the processor. |
