PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material capable of suppressing decomposition of organic materials even in a high temperature region such as≥500°C. SOLUTION: The friction material includes a hydrated alumina represented by Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>(nH<SB>2</SB>O). As the hydrated alumina, monohydrate or trihydrate of a crystalline structure is preferable. The content of the hydrated alumina is 0.5-20.5 vol.%.
