PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of a variable compression ratio engine, the device that can suppress repetitive generation of self ignition. SOLUTION: A control device 100 of a variable compression ratio engine functions for a variable compression ratio engine 10 that is a spark ignition type engine including one or more cylinders 15 and a variable compression ratio mechanism 20 that can vary a mechanical compression ratio between a low compression ratio and a high compression ratio in each individual cylinder. The control device controls the variable compression ratio mechanism in such a manner that, in an exhaust stroke of a cylinder in which generation of self ignition is detected by a self ignition detecting part that detects generation of self ignition in each cylinder, the mechanical compression ratio of the detected cylinder is changed from a low compression ratio to a high compression ratio, and that in an intake stroke occurring subsequent to the exhaust stroke, the mechanical compression ratio of the cylinder is changed from the high compression ratio to the low compression ratio.
