The device (12) has a camera assembly (20) for recording stereoscopic images and comprising camera modules (22, 24) and an actuator unit (26). A control unit (14) processes signals of the camera assembly and provides an output signal that is supplied to a display unit (30). The control unit adjusts position of the camera modules based on distance between the camera assembly and an object to be monitored. The display unit is designed as a stereoscopic display. A lighting unit (18) illuminates the object, and has a ring of LEDs arranged around the camera modules.
