A system controls a hybrid vehicle 10 having a primary and a secondary power source such as an electric motor (30 see fig 1) and an internal combustion engine (20 see fig 1) respectively connectable to a driveline. The systems control unit causes pre-emptive engine initiation and subsequent connection to the driveline. The control unit (100 see fig 1) determines when the vehicle 10 is in a first driving mode with the engine (20) disconnected and not initiated and with the electric motor (30) and battery pack (34 see fig 1) delivering torque to the driveline in response to driver demand. The control unit can determine if a steering angle and situational status are indicative that an expected driver demanded torque will not be met by the primary power source alone. In response, the control unit (100) automatically and pre-emptively causes the engine (20) to be initiated and connected to the driveline at a time before the actual driver demanded torque reaches or exceeds said expected driver demanded torque. The invention ensures that the vehicle is ready for a task such as a reverse uphill manoeuvre. |
