The invention is in the field of in vitro test methods for the determination of properties of certain test compounds. More in particular, the invention provides a method for the determination of the skin sensitizing properties of a compound. For that purpose, the expression level of certain microRNAs is determined. More specifically, the invention provides a method for determining whether a test compound has skin sensitizing potential by exposing a keratinocyte cell in a cell culture to the test compound with, determining the level of expression of microRNA 1973 and concluding that the compound has skin sensitizing potential when the expression level of microRNA 1973 is above a predetermined reference value.
