The present invention describes a synthetic turf having super absorbent materials in order to keep the synthetic turf cooler than conventional synthetic turfs. The present invention also provides for synthetic turf infill cooling particles comprising a layer of water-absorbing material coating a foundation comprising a core substrate. In one embodiment, the cooling particle is comprised of a core particle or substrate, which is coated with a water-absorbing material. In one embodiment, the water-absorbing material is a super absorbent polymer. |

1. A synthetic turf infill cooling granule comprising:
a core particle having an outer surface; and a superabsorbent polymer composition comprising: (a) one or more water-soluble polymers; and (b) one or more cross-linking agents; wherein the one or more water-soluble polymers comprise polymerizable unsaturated monomers with one or more acid functional groups; wherein from 5 to 30% of the acid groups on the one or more water-soluble polymers are crosslinked by the one or more crosslinking agents to form a superabsorbent polymer composition that is water-swellable and substantially water insoluble but capable of absorbing at least about 5 times its weight in water; wherein the superabsorbent polymer composition forms a coating over the outer surface of the core particle and comprises about 0.2% to about 10% by weight of the core particle; wherein the size of the coated particle has a median size that is within a range of about 5 to about 60 mesh; and wherein the core particle comprises a granular material selected from the group consisting of resilient particles, inelastic particles or combinations thereof. |
