An example network device includes one or more network interface cards and a control unit. The network interface cards are configured to send and receive messages with a first network operating in accordance with a first network-layer protocol and a second network operating in accordance with a second network-layer protocol and a control unit. The control unit is configured to receive a message via the one or more network interface cards, transform the message from conforming to a first transitioning protocol to conforming to a second transitioning protocol, and forward the message via the second network.

1. A method comprising:
receiving, with a network device, a message via a first network, wherein the message conforms to a first transitioning protocol, and wherein the network device couples the first network operating in accordance with a first network-layer protocol with a second network operating in accordance with a second network-layer protocol; transforming, with the network device, the message from conforming to the first transitioning protocol to conforming to a second transitioning protocol, wherein the first and second transitioning protocols are different transitioning protocols for transitioning between Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), and wherein each of the first and second transitioning protocol use a different format for tunneling network packets of the first network-layer protocol over the second network operating in accordance with the second network-layer protocol; and forwarding, with the network device, the message via the second network.
