[Class 41] A rotatable drum 10 of cylindrical form, and suitable for conveying magnetizable sheets through an electrolytic plating bath or pickling bath, comprises a series of conductive, and preferably, magnetic facing plates 12 in watertight contact with, and preferably bonded to, a rubber or other surround 13 moulded and bonded to the drum so as to form a continuous surface free from projections Beneath each plate are electromagnets 14 . . . 21 and current is conveyed by leads 22 ... 29 to a grid 30 in contact with the plates. The sheets 31 to be treated overlap the surround and are magnetically held during their passage through the container 11, the attraction being such as to prevent access of electrolyte to their backs. Rubber also protects the magnets and poles. In operation, sheets are taken from a stack by, for example, suction cups and deposited at proper intervals on a synchronous conveyer 34 whence they are passed to rollers 35, 36 and held by electromagnets 37 to the roller 36. At the point where the leading edge meets the drum, the appropriate electromagnets therein are energized and hold the sheet until it reaches the lower exit roller 38, the electromagnet of which passes the sheet on an exit conveyer, the drum magnet being then automatically de-energized. The exit rollers also serve as squeegees and the electromagnets thereof may serve to neutralize residual magnetism in the sheets. The fields of rollers 36, 38 are designed to extend from the conveyer exit point to the nip with the drum, but the magnets are adjustable to vary this arrangement. The facing plates 12 may be crossed by other rubber strips so as to take half-size sheets. Specification 472,989 is referred to. |
