The device (20) has a sinusoidal wave generator (205) for transmitting a periodic signal, and a receiver (215) for receiving the periodic signal modulated by a living body. A phasemeter (220) measures a phase difference between the received signal and the transmitted signal, and a detection unit (225) detects a living body as a function of the measured phase difference. The detection unit compares a value representative of the phase difference with an adaptive threshold value, where the sinusoidal wave generator and the receiver are located behind a coating (210) of a swimming pool (255). An independent claim is also included for a method for detection of a living body in a swimming pool.
