PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing or reducing damage by peripheral vascular disease (PVD) as well as ischemic events comprising ischemic osteonecrosis, peritoneum ischemia, chronic eye disease, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy in a certain mammals at risk of an ischemic event.SOLUTION: A method of reducing the formation of atherosclerotic plaque by IM, oral, pulmonary or transdermal administration of a therapeutically effective amount of a bipolar trans carotenoid. The bipolar trans carotenoid is provided as a composition containing cyclodextrin.
