Aromatic and hydroaromatic hydroperoxides are prepared by oxidizing a hydroaromatic hydrocarbon or an alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon of the formula <FORM:0712708/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 is aryl, R2 is alkyl and R3 is hydrogen or alkyl, by an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of cerium. Preferably the concentration of cerium added does not exceed 0.1 percent and is in the form of a compound soluble in the reaction mixture, such as the naphthenate, oleate, palmitate or stearate. The preferred reaction temperature is in the range 65-115 DEG C. In examples: the oxidation by molecular oxygen in the presence of cerium naphthenate of ethyl benzene, isopropyl benzene, p-cymene, methylcyclohexane, tetrahydronaphthalene, decahydronaphthalene, isopropyl naphthalene and ethyl isopropyl naphthalene and ethyl isopropyl naphthalene, is described, giving the corresponding hydroperoxides. |
