The method involves supplying an anode (14) with hydrogen-containing fuel gas (22) and a cathode (16) with oxygen-containing oxidant gas (30). A portion of fuel gas discharged from an anode circuit (24) is recirculated to the anode. The fuel gas taken from the anode circuit is supplied to the cathode. The hydrogen contained in the fuel gas is directly reacted with oxygen. An independent claim is included for a fuel cell system.
