The side gas bag unit (10) has a gas bag (12) with two side walls, which enclose a chamber. The gas bag has a lower portion (14) and an upper portion (16), where the upper portion is located above the lower portion, when the gas bag is mounted and is fully deployed. A compound, particularly a compound seam (30) is provided, which extends in the lower portion of the gas bag through the chamber. An inwardly folded portion of the upper portion of the gas bag is kept away from an outlet opening (23) of a gas generator unit (20).
