The method involves deriving an adjustment request of a driver from a contact of an interior rear view mirror (1) with a hand of the driver or an approximation of the hand of the driver on the rear view mirror. A direction of desired adjustment of the rear view mirror is produced by the contact of respective sensor regions (5, 6, 7, 8) of the rear view mirror. The direction of the desired adjustment of the rear view mirror is effected by a position of a driver relative to the rear view mirror and/or by detection of a corresponding hand gesture. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying-out a method for adjusting an interior rear view mirror of a motor vehicle.
