The present invention relates to a battery management system for monitoring the status of a battery of an electric vehicle and, in particular, to a system and a method for replacing a battery unit of a battery pack, capable of replacing only an underperforming or damaged battery module or battery cell of a battery pack including a plurality of battery modules composed of a plurality of cells, and improving the performance of the battery pack by balancing the other existing battery modules or battery cells with a new battery module or battery cell in replacement of a battery module or a battery cell. A battery can be efficiently used by preventing the waste of the battery because usable battery cells in the same battery pack do not need to be discarded owing to each battery cell in the battery pack able to be replaced separately. Driver satisfaction level with an electric vehicle can be raised and the penetration rate of electric vehicles can be increased owing to a small amount of battery maintenance costs.
