A write head includes an electromagnetic element 10 operable to generate a magnetic field that impinges on a selected portion of a magnetic material of a data storage medium .The electromagnetic element includes a magnetic structure including a matrix material 18, and a plurality of magnetic nanoparticles 14 held in the matrix material. The magnetic nano particles may be iron (Fe) and the matrix material cobalt (Co). The nanoparticles may comprise a core formed from a ferromagnetic transition metal and a shell layer of either a ferromagnetic or nonmagnetic transition metal. The matrix material may include water. The nanoparticles or the matrix material may include embedded gas atoms or molecules.
